1843-1932. English landscape gardener and
writer. She created over 200 gardens, many in
collaboration with the architect Edwin
Lutyens. Her own home at Munstead Wood,
Surrey was designed for her by Lutyens.
Originally a painter and embroiderer, she
took up gardening at the age of 48, because
of worsening eyesight. In her books, she
advocated natural gardens of the cottage
type, with plentiful herbaceous borders.
